From The Desk of Convenor
Dear Friends
It was October 2007 when I was returning from Agra after participating Annual Laparoscopic Workshop at Agra organized by Prof. S.D.Maurya and his team. I witnessed a conversation Prof. Maurya had with one of our colleagues from another endoscopic society and it's functioning. I could feel the pain and concern in Prof. Maurya about commercialization of half cooked laparoscopic training credentialing at an exorbitant cost. Prof. Maurya's strong belief in PHILOSOPHY OF ANCIENT INDIAN TEACHING ("Gurukul Parampara") prevalent in our country for centuries and was successful in creating "Guru-Shishya Parampara" where Guru teaches his disciple to make his student like "HIMSELF" i.e. "GURU BANAYE AAP SAMAAN" made me think about his philosophy. What Prof. Maurya was asking was very relevant and achievable that real laparoscopic training can be provided at "no cost or minimal cost". I learnt that Dr. Maurya's way of providing real laparoscopic training had no parallel in the whole world and that convinced me that real laparoscopic training to young and practicing surgeons in India is possible if like-minded people join hands and work towards achieving this goal. To fulfill this goal "Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of India (SELSI)" was born in the year 2007. We persuaded Dr. S. D. Maurya to take the leadership of the SELSI and under Prof. Maurya as President and Dr. V.K.Bansal as Secretary of SELSI, the Inaugural Conference of Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of India WAS were held from 27 - 30 March 2008 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The Second Annual Conference of Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of India will be held on 24 & 25th October 2009 at Agra and devoted to Laparoscopic General, Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, Thoracoscopic, Bariatric, Paediatric, Gynaecology, Hernia surgery, Urology and Surgical Oncology.
The response to SELSI, which we have received across our vast nation, has been overwhelming and encouraged us to move forward with "SELSI Philosophy" of Laparoscopic training. Since the birth of SELSI, more than 1200 surgeons have joined as life member and marching forward with SELSI Philosophy. We have been involved in spreading the message of "SELSI Philosophy" by undertaking "Laparoscopy Pilgrimage" far and wide in our vast nation.
As a Convener of SELSI, I am confident that SELSI will grow stronger under Prof. Maurya's dynamic leadership since it has unique "SELSI Philosophy" i.e. "Make Thyself" by providing structured hands-on-training in laparoscopic surgery to young and practicing surgeons from India and abroad.
I invite each and every surgeon and industry to join the movement of SELSI Philosophy across our beloved country and world.
GOD BLESS US ALL
Your Own self,
Prof M C Misra, Convenor - SELSI
